war & peace

The old prince, his father, is in serious decline.

Bald Hills, that beloved dream, in enemy hands.

These thoughts rise in a cloud

with the dust in the road along which he leads his regiment

and like the dust, once stirred, never quite settle,

only waft, collecting in swirls at the men’s backs,

clinging to their shabby uniforms,

flecking their beards and hair, sifting into eyes, ears, skin . . .

They march away from Smolensk, which is lost.

In each man’s face — whether brutish, resigned, lost,

devoted, deceitful, careless, roguish, afraid,

empty, or about to erupt — in each arrangement of eyes

the prince sees the same thing: himself,

and his dream of himself. If only

it would rain — They march away from battle

toward battle, leaving dust in their wake.
